As a parent, ensuring the health of your child’s eyesight is crucial in supporting their overall well-being and development. Fortunately, Ontario’s provincial government makes this a bit easier by covering the cost of children’s eye exams through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).
Eye exams aren’t the only thing covered by OHIP, but there are certain requirements to be aware of for covered services, which we’ll discuss in more detail below. The best thing to do is ask your child’s optometrist if you’re unsure if OHIP covers a specific eye-related service.
Importance of Regular Eye Exams for Children
Routine eye exams are more than just a checkpoint—they’re a crucial element in your child’s long-term vision and eye health. Early childhood is a period of rapid growth and change and vision is no exception. Regular eye exams as recommended by your child’s eye doctor can help identify and correct issues that could impede learning and social interaction if left unchecked.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) has several eye exam frequency recommendations. Infants should have an eye exam between 6 and 9 months. Then a child should get another exam between the ages of 2 and 3. And then an annual exam from 4 years up to 19. These are minimum recommendations, so your child’s eye doctor may recommend a different schedule.
Overview of Eye Exams in Ontario
Children aged 19 and under are entitled to one full eye examination annually under the OHIP. Children in Ontario will also be eligible for any minor assessments needed in addition to their comprehensive eye exam coverage through the OHIP.
Benefits of Children’s Eye Exams
The benefit of children having comprehensive eye exams can be reflected in various aspects of their lives.
Early Detection of Vision Problems
Vision problems can be notoriously stealthy. We can’t see what they see. Problems can often present with subtle symptoms that could be overlooked by parents and teachers. And a child may not notice a difference in their vision either. So, regular eye exams help with early detection, paving the way for timely intervention.
Prevention of Long-Term Eye Conditions
Catching visual impairments early can prevent the progression into more serious conditions. Consistent check-ins with an optometrist can help maintain ocular health and prevent future complications.
Better Academic Performance
A child’s ability to see clearly is fundamentally linked to their academic performance and overall school experience. This highlights the importance of these comprehensive eye exams to maintain your child’s vision.
Accessing OHIP Covered Eye Exams
Navigating how to access these free eye examinations might seem confusing at first, but it’s typically pretty straightforward.
Finding OHIP-Covered Optometrists
Most optometrists in Ontario accept OHIP coverage. But it’s good to confirm this before booking your appointment with the optometrist in case they don’t. This will help avoid an unexpected bill at the end of your appointment.
Booking Appointments & Necessary Documentation
Ensure you have your child’s health card ready when preparing for the appointment, as this documents their eligibility for the free service. It’s worth noting that if your child has seen this eye doctor previously, they may already have this on file.
What Other Optometry Services Does OHIP Cover?
Your child may be eligible for additional services above the comprehensive eye exam and follow-up minor assessments if your family is on the Ontario Disability Support Program. A conversation with your eye doctor about your child’s eligibility will be beneficial.
Once a child enters adulthood, they may still be able to receive an annual exam with the same coverage, but only if they have a diagnosed eligible medical condition. Additionally, seniors over 65 can get an OHIP eye exam every 18 months with up to 2 additional follow-up minor assessments.
Other Eye Care Options
OHIP is an excellent service to use. But it’s not always the only option if finances are tight.
Private Insurance Coverage
Those with additional private health insurance from their employer may have more comprehensive coverage extending beyond OHIP’s offerings and potentially covering a range of eye care services or more frequent exams.
Low-Cost or Subsidized Programs
Various community programs and non-profits offer eye care at lowered costs for qualifying individuals. Research local options if you’re looking for more resources beyond OHIP. One example may be the Ontario Works Program.
Book Your Child’s Next Eye Exam
Regular eye exams are a gateway to ensuring your child’s visual acuity and overall eye health are at their best. The coverage provided by OHIP underscores the importance of pediatric eye care and reminds parents of the available resources. We encourage all parents in Ontario to take advantage of this beneficial service.
